Can I go to the doctors without my parents knowledge? I'm 17.

Gutt, 17

Hi, I'm 17 (18 in a few days) and i was wondering if I'm able to go to the doctor's without my mother knowing, i want to get tested for ADHD & Autism. I've had strong suspicions about it for the past 2-3ish years however, whenever i've brought it up with my mother she instantly shot it down saying stuff like "I know you and you don't have any symptoms", she's set that i'm a normal child. However, I've never been open with her about who/how i truly am, I always instinctively "mask" myself whenever i'm near her. Thus, i really want to get it checked out, however i'm not able to if she knows. So, in short, can i go to the doctor's without her knowing so i can get this tested?

Hi!

Great question! From the age of 16 in Norway you are independent from your parents when it comes to all decisions regarding your own health, medications and so forth. That means that you by default enjoy full patient-doctor-confidentiality also towards your parents. Your parents have no special privileges compared to anyone else, and can no longer access your patient journal or anything of the sort.

So to conclude, the answer is yes you absolutely can go to the doctors without your parents knowledge. Do check that the office have your phone number registered and that they don't send any mail to your parents address. Let them know why. Occasionally they will send out a notification about your appointment, a bill or similar. If your parents phone number is on register for your person they may receive this by mistake.

I hope this answer was useful to you. Wish you well!

Sincerely
