I suck at Maths - what can I do?

Your Math teacher ought to be able to help you. If you are more comfortable with speaking to your main teacher, that could be a possibility too. Your grownups at home may help you ask for such a meeting – and accompany you as well. All students are entitled to help, with all subjects.

There could be several reasons for the difficulties that you are experiencing. For example, it might be that basic knowledge is lacking. Maths starts with understanding the numbers and how they are organised. Then we continue by learning how to add and subtract, and then how to multiply, and so on. Everything is taught step by step. If a step was missed or was not understood, it is difficult to continue learning.

Some students also suffer from something called dyscalculia. This makes it difficult to see and to understand the numbers – a bit like dyslexia.

Ask your teacher for a diagnostic test in maths – that would make it easier for the teacher to figure out how to help you. If you think it is needed, you could also ask for a test to rule out or confirm, dyscalculia.
